Eamonn Arts

Vendor Biography

Eamonn was born in Dublin and brought up in London.  He started drawing and painting whilst at school with a GCSE certificate in Art and on an Art foundation in Croydon College.   Eamonn Qualified as a Building Surveyor but never lost his interest in art and returned to Ireland so he could follow his dream

He returned in 2000 and set up his home and workshop/studio in the beautiful Glen of Imaal in the Wicklow Mountains.

One of the outstanding features of the area is the Ancient Peat Bogs.  Eamonn wanted to harness the history and energy of the bogs so he started collecting and sculpting the special material that is bog oak.  He has been working in all forms of wood for the past 15 years, but since 2005 has he been working full time as an Artist with special interesting in getting this undervalued and misunderstood material its rightful place in the culture of Ireland and bringing it to a modern art form.

Eamonn works on designing both abstract and traditional figures.  He is intrigued by the timeless quality of the locally sourced bog oak and takes pride in the preparation, sculpting and presentation of the product in equal measure.

To build up his skills and artistic knowledge he has been on courses in Dublin at the Hugh Lane Gallery and UCD attending the History of Art and Understanding Sculpture Courses.  He has also done various other workshops.

As a member of the Craft Council of Ireland and  as a past Chairperson of “Cruthu Art” network in West Wicklow, he has exhibited in Dublin, Wicklow and Carlow.  The Exhibitions have included Art Source at the RDS Dublin, The Dunlavin Art Festival, Glencree Reconciliation Centre and Russborough House.  He has also had work on display in various Galleries both in Ireland and overseas.

In January 2014 he held a solo exhibition in Sydney Australia and shipped 18 pieces for the exhibition supported by Wicklow Enterprise Board and the Irish Consulate in Sydney.

In 2008, he set up his own workshop/studio at Russborough House, Blessington and now has a permanent Gallery area with an outlet for his work.  He takes great delight in sharing the story of his work and how each of his pieces embodies the physical heart of Ireland approximately 5,000 years old.
